Choose People Who Choose You

One of the things I've learned over time is that love may be unconditional but relationships are not. Otherwise, we would enable people to abuse us. I've been raised on the idea that it's never about whom you attract but whom you choose.

That said, the countdown to the release of my debut single is reinforcing something else that I've learned, sometimes painfully, especially over the past few years: Choose people who also choose you. People who are supportive and willing to work alongside you to help make your dreams come true. People who genuinely care about your well being. People who don't swim in the "shallow".

Recently, I saw a post from @luvvie that spoke to me on this issue. Her advice? "Build relationships before you need them. Your network should be set and paid attention to before you need to activate it. Deepen friendships before you need shoulders to lean on. Anything else is transactional."

I used to think that the best way to make a friend is to be a friend. But I've come to realize that isn't always true and you've got to set boundaries and place value on yourself and to whom you give energy. The people who are meant to be in your life will come - and stay.
