Recollections of "Yaad"

Jamaica is in my DNA. I have so many good recollections of "Yaad" - as Jamaicans fondly call their island home. @damianmarley made famous its other name, JAMROCK, but Yaad is where it's at, and every Jamaican knows exactly what you mean.

However you refer to it, Jamaica has a way of grabbing hold of your heart. It makes an indelible impression that leaves you hungering for more.

I remember the summers at my grandparents' house in the suburbs outside of Montego Bay. My grandfather loved to plant fruit trees and vegetables on the property surrounding the house. Come to think of it, if you haven't planted food in your backyard, are you even Jamaican?? 😂 My Gramps was always so proud of his crops and, for sure, the pride he had in his bounty helped expand our education of tropical fruits like guineps, naseberry and otaheite apples, which weren't really apples at all in my mind. 😂 Have you ever seen bananas growing on a tree? Or aimed to "juk" (pick) coconuts from a tall-ass tree with a long stick, just to enjoy the water inside and the "jelly"?

My Gramps never wanted to live in America; visits were sufficient for the man who had risen from very humble beginnings to become the mayor of the city. As I grow older in America, I can understand why.

Jamaican music. Jamaican food. Jamaican beaches. The breathtaking beauty of the island. The warm embrace of its people. The continued striving to achieve excellence in the midst of adversity. The friendships that spill over into the streets. These are only a few things that make Jamaica unique in my mind's eye. I cannot wait to go back for another visit.

Truly, I hope you enjoy my latest release, NERVE, a roots reggae track that pays homage to my Jamaican roots. It really was a labor of love.
